History A Brief History Unique among public gardens in the United States, The Bloedel Reserve was created by Prentice Bloedel and his wife, Virginia, who resided on the property from 1951 until 1986. The son of a prominent lumber company owner, Prentice was educated at the Thatcher School in Ojai, California and at Yale University. While continuing his association with the Thatcher School as a teacher in the late 1920s, he was called upon by his father to take the helm of the family timber business. He took an early retirement from MacMillan Bloedel Timber Company in 1950 to devote the balance of his life to the creation of the gardens of what is now The Bloedel Reserve. Although he was advised by and worked with noted landscape architects, including Thomas Church, Richard Haag, Fujitaro Kubota, and Iain Robertson, the overall vision for The Reserves gardens was his alone. Prentice Bloedel was a pioneer in renewable resources and sustainability. He was the first to use sawdust as a fuel to power his companys mills. He replanted clear cut areas, and started a company that marketed fireplace logs made from sawdust. He also was deeply interested in the relationship between people and the natural world, and the power of landscape to evoke emotions ranging from tranquility to exhilaration. Indeed, some believe that due to his early school experiences and his bout with polio as a young man, Prentice Bloedel may have been ahead of his time in his understanding of the therapeutic power of gardens and landscape. Since 1986, MRA has successfully recruited more than 1100 field management and Home Office executives into positions ranging from company president to product specialist. While cutting across channels such as career, brokerage, PPGA, broker/dealers and wirehouses, the common denominator in MRA s management recruiting is a focus on building distribution. As a by-product of making over 100, 000 phone calls per year into the financial services arena, MRA obtains the most current data on personnel, strategies and compensation programs being utilized in the marketplace. MRA then teams with its clients using up-to-date competitive intelligence to recruit the top management performers in the industry. It is not unusual for clients to think of a search firm strictly as a source of names of potential candidates. Although research is important, it represents only 20% of MRA s contribution to a client s recruiting success. More critical is MRA s ability to motivate the candidate to take action. Another important aspect of the process is working with the clients to design incentive compensation and transitional subsidy packages that help reinforce a leading candidate s decision to join a particular company. MRA is compensated for its executive search services through a unique schedule of flat fees and retainers. Unlike the standard industry fee, which is based on a percentage of projected annual income, MRA offers its clients an approach that will maximize the productivity of the available recruiting budget. By working closely with each client to understand its culture, goals and sales metrics, MRA provides executive search services that ensure only the most appropriate candidate is hired.
