Matthew VanLandingham, MD Born and raised in the Jackson area, Dr. VanLandingham first became interested in neurosurgery while studying the cognitive sciences at Rice University. He returned home for medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical College, and immediately began working with the Neurosurgery Department. During this time, he assisted with research projects and observing cases whenever possible. Upon completing medical school, Dr. VanLandingham began residency at the University of Tennessee/Semmes-Murphey Clinic in Memphis, training in the newest, minimally-invasive techniques for spinal and cranial surgery. During residency he spent six months as an international fellow at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, England—one of the centers that pioneered the development of the artificial cervical disc. Dr. VanLandingham currently maintains a general neurosurgical practice, evaluating and treating patients with spinal and cranial pathologies. He is interested in neuro-oncology and trigeminal neuralgia. He is also certified in the Cyberknife stereotactic radiosurgery system. In keeping with the philosophy of the Surgical Division at NS2, he believes that surgery for pain should only be considered after less invasive treatments have failed. If surgery is ultimately selected, Dr. VanLandingham strives to minimize his surgical footprint to speed return to work and normal life.

He has a particular interest and expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery. These minimal access techniques allow him to relieve pain, weakness and numbness, and/or stabilize the spine, while minimizing disruption of normal surrounding tissues, which helps speed recovery.
