The Nature Conservancy is a worldwide organization that seeks to preserve nature throughout the world. A chapter of the conservancy is located right in the heart of Devil's Den, which the organization says is the largest tract of undeveloped land in Fairfield County.
Popular with rock climbers, Chatfield Hollow State Park offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, moutain biking, swimming and fishing. The park is well known for its Indian caves and scenic boardwalk built over a swamp. Chatfield Hollow is a trout park and the fish are stocked at the start of every season in the spring. Pets are allowed in picnic areas and hiking trails. Leashes are required.
For a four-season nature experience, Roosevelt Forest in north Stratford, on the Shelton border, is a great destination for residents. With walking trails, a scenic pond and picnic area, Roosevelt Forest is a peaceful experience in fall, winter, spring and summer.
The forest was created as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program during the Great Depression.
The 250-acres property is reportedly the only town-owned forest in the state. This Stratford gem is open to those with proof of residency.
Smith Middle School is located in the heart of Glastonbury and serves students in grades 7 to 8. The school, which received a distinguished GreatSchools Rating, offers classes in English, foreign language, science, math, art, physical education, health, music and much more. Dudley Seymour State Park is located off Rickety Bridge at the end of Clarkhurst Road. Visitors enjoy cross country skiing, fishing, hiking, bird watching and hunting in designated areas. It is a walk-in park with limited parking.
