Fremont Park, located on what used to be the site of Camp Fremont, is an unexpected oasis of serenity in downtown Menlo Park. Numerous trees tower over businesses in the immediate vicinity and provide shade to visitors who come to sit at the park benches that line the walking trail. Fun fact: The tables are made of recycled plastic bottles.

The site was named for Major General John C. Fremont of the National Guard, circa 1918, who led and the trained troops in the 41st division. Plaques that commemorate the park's history dot the area behind the stage which stands in the middle of the park. Local bands often play on the stage during the summer months.

Children let their imaginations run wild on the brightly colored play structures at Nealon Park.  Their laughter is most audible during the summer months, when parents bring their children here for picnics and sand castle building sessions. Each playground area is walled off, so parents can worry less about their little one running off to other areas out of their sight range.

Older children as well as adults who are young at heart can take advantage of the tennis courts, softball field, and various picnic tables.

The tennis court requires a key which can be acquired for a fee at the Burgess Recreation Center.  Menlo Park residents pay $45 per year and non residents pay $100 for tennis keys.  Proof of residency is required at the time of acquisition.

Take note of the surface of the picnic table in the photo. You might want to bring a table cloth if you're planning a picnic here, otherwise your utensils might fall through the table's ventilation holes.

Also, if you own a car that is low to the ground, park with care; there's a dip in the asphalt before the parking spaces.
