The Sickle Cell Disease Association of Mobile Chapters inception dates back to 1972 when a group of community leaders became concerned about the significant health problems associated with sickle cell disease and how it was affecting the community. The chapter was incorporated in 1976 and has since dedicated its efforts toward improving the quality of life for individuals with the disease. Services offered by the Association are Sickle Cell Testing, Counseling, Education, After-School Tutorial, Supportive and Referral Services. In addition to Mobile County, Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Covington, Escambia, Monroe, and Washington Counties benefit form the services offered by Mobile Chapter In 1981, the Association developed a partnership with the University of South Alabama and continues to benefit from research programs and medical services provided for the sickle cell population. The establishment of this important link between the community based organization and the University of South Alabama has evolved into a comprehensive health care center for individuals with sickle cell disease.
