The church aims to be the type of church Paul writes about in Ephesians 2:19-21: "You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family. We are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We who believe are carefully joined together, becoming a holy temple for the Lord."

In 1861 Jonathan Blanchard, the first president of Wheaton College, founded College Church, then known as the First Church of Christ in Wheaton. Affiliated with the Congregational Association of Illinois, the church was public about its opposition to slavery, liquor, secret societies, tobacco, drug use, dancing, card games and theater attendance, and it played a role in banning the sale of alcohol in Wheaton. In 1878, reorganization led to the church's new name: the College Church of Christ. It wasn't until 1963 that its current name, College Church, was established.

College Church is committed to following the New Testament pattern of evangelism by expanding its local presence. The church's 10 Articles of Faith detail its essential beliefs, viewable on the College Church website.
