Since 1971 Extrude Hone AFM has pioneered the application of abrasive flow machining (AFM) for internal deburring and polishing into dozens of industries. From high performance fuel and air passages for aerospace and automotive, diesel, and turbine engines, to ultrapure fluid handling components for food processing, semiconductor fabrication, and medical applications, to high precision tools and dies, to 3D printed, additive manufacturing selective laser sintered (SLS) applications. Along the way, we have developed a remarkable resumea? and reputation for being in the forefront of advancing the AFM technology worldwide improving performance and efficiency of applications in these fields. Extrude Hone Abrasive Flow Machining, is an interior surface finishing process characterized by flowing a silicon carbide abrasive-laden media through a workpiece. AFM smooths and finishes rough surfaces, and is specifically used to remove burrs, polish surfaces, and form radii, while at the same time removing material. Our media has some of the same characteristics as bread dough or the childa?s toy a?oeSilly Puttya??. The abrasive particles which are mixed into the media grind away, rather than shear off the material. The nature of AFM makes it ideal for interior surfaces, slots, holes, cavities, and other areas that may be difficult to reach with conventional polishing or grinding processes. An abrasive flow machine normally includes 2 media chambers equipped with hydraulic rams, a fixture for holding the workpiece, and a clamping system that holds all the components tightly together. All machines allow for the loading of different types of abrasive media and include the capacity to adjust the pressure (400-1200psi) used in extruding the media through the workpiece. They may be manually operated or automated using CNC. AFM may be performed as a one-way flow process, or more typically repeatedly as a two-way flow process.
